about

rudi.jpgLike Rudy Van Disarzio [pictured] and Spider Dijon, are you on a musical quest for that elusive new sound?

If you’re nodding and suddenly feeling warmer inside, then read on.

clatterbox is the sidetable on which the key to open the door to the semi-anarchic world of musical instrument building sits – unless the last person to use said key forgot to replace it – in which case go around the back and knock loudly.

clatterbox documents musical instrument building via this website; produces the sound HOUNDS zine series; organises occasional events; and other things that take our fancy.

scope
clatterbox isn’t attempting to cover every experimental musical instrument out there, but rather we select instruments we think are particularly engaging: sonically, visually, and conceptually.

Documenting experimental musical instruments takes time, especially as we want to provide as much information as possible for each instrument, rather than just a grab bag of links or quick snippets. Although having said that you’ll notice that many of the instrument profiles are a work in progress.

funding
clatterbox received a presentation + promotion grant from the Music Board of the Australia Council in support of this website, and towards publishing the sound HOUND zine series 2009-2010.
